Study on Grid System of Fluid Domain for Fluid-Structure Interaction

This paper shows the effect on fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analys is according to the difference of grid system. The objective is a numerical benchmark model commonly used for FSI analysis. The model consists of a cylinder and an elastic tail, and it is in laminar incompressible channel flow. The elastic tail plate is periodically deformed due to the vortices around the cylinder. The grid to solve flow structure in fluid domain should be well distributed around the object, and the grid should be deformed not to affect the quality of analysis result. Two grid systems are applied for the fluid domain in this research. One is a trimmer mesh around the elastic tail plate which can be deformed by morphing method. The other is an overset gird surrounding the elastic tail plate. The analyses are performed using commercial codes for fluid and structure solvers with two-way coupling. And the deformation characteristics of the elastic object are compared.
