Dependence of Crystalline Phases on Hydroxyaptite Formation in Bioactive Glass-ceramics

A bioactive glass in the system of 55.1SiO2-3.4P2O5-9.2Na2O-27.8CaO-4.5CaF2(mol%) crystallized into various crystalline phases, such as apatite, Na2Ca3Si6O16, alpha-wollastonite and beta-wollastonite, depending on the firing temperatures. The specimens were reacted in a simulated body fluid and the hydroxyapatite forming behavior was investigated depending on the crystalline phases present in the glass-ceramics. The hydroxyapatite forming rate was faster in the sample containing alpha- and beta wollastonite and its forming rate in a glass-ceramics with alpha-wollastonite was much faster than in the corresponding bulk glass. The strength of specimens was also measured.
