Magnetic Fe3O4/polystyrene (PS) composite particles were synthesized via a Shirasu porous glass (SPG) membrane emulsification technique and introduced to carbonyl iron (CI) particle-based magnetorheological (MR) fluid as an additive to enhance its MR performance and dispersion stability relative to pure CI particle-based MR suspension. The SPG method was adopted for achieving a narrow size distribution of the magnetic composite particles. The morphology and size distribution of Fe3O4/PS composites were examined by transmission electron microscope and dynamic light scattering, respectively. The magnetic characteristic of Fe3O4/PS composites was evaluated using vibrating sample magnetometer. Rheological properties of both pure CI and CI-Fe3O4/PS additive-based MR suspensions were investigated by a rotation rheometer via a steady shear test under different external magnetic field strengths. The dispersion stability of both MR suspensions were also measured through Turbiscan.
