Invited Lecture: A Novel Method to Calculate Pixel and Inter-Electrode Capacitances of Thin-Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Displays

Recently, as the applications of TFT-LCDs have expended to high-quality TVs and monitors, and micro-projection systems, the demand for the fine pitch and high resolution displays has abruptly increased. These TFT-LCDs inevitably require smaller pixels and narrower spaces between a pixel electrode and neighboring bus lines, thereby leading to complicated parasitic inter-electrode capacitances. In this lecture, I present a novel method to calculate exactly not only a pixel capacitance but also inter-electrode capacitances of TFT-LCDs using electrostatic energy distribution in a pixel. The capacitances are very important parameters for the optimal design of TFT structures and driving waveforms, since the pixel capacitance definitely affects the charging characteristics of the TFTs and the inter-electrode capacitances seriously distort the voltage waveforms applied to the gate and data electrodes
