Bingham and Response Characteristics of ER Fluids in Shear and Flow Modes

In this work two different working modes of ER fluids are experimentally evaluated and its difference is proved by adopting a cylidricaly ER damper which is operated in the flow mode. As a first step, experimental apparatus is manufactured for the measurement of field-dependent Bingham characteristics. The yield stresses are distilled and compared in two different modes. In addition, response time to step input is tested and compared. The predicted damping forces on the basis of two different modes are compared with the measured one. This result suggests a very important fact that right test for Bingham property needs to be undertaken for right devices which have the same working mode as the material testing.
