Optimizing the Execution of Location-Dependent Queries in Mobile Computing Environments

In mobile computing environments, to minimize the waste of restricted resource and ultimately the query processing cost, the efficient query processing mechanism that can also optimize the execution of location-dependent queries is highly required. In this paper, we propose a location-dependent query proc-essing mechanism that can efficiently execute location-dependent queries in mobile computing environments. In the proposed mechanism, a location-dependent query is split into a set of partial region queries each of which is executed at local database server that manages the information of a region geographically partitioned. To minimize the communication cost and local processing cost, the query space of each partial region queries is represented by the minimal rectangle. The experimental results show that the proposed mecha-nism gets remarkable improvement of the size of query space than that of the previous work.
