A manufacturing process of the power-steering worm blank is analyzed by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The process contains three stages such as indentation, extrusion, and upsetting, which was designed by a forming equipment expert. The design criterion of process made by equipment expert is the forging load within the available press limit. Also, the final product should not have any geometrical defect. The results of simulation are summarized in terms of deforming patterns, effective strain distribution, load-stroke relationships, and die pressure for each forming operation. The die pressure data may be utilized to analyze the elastic behavior of tools and dies. Efforts are focused to get the reason why the tool expert designed the forming process in three operations. Simulation of one step forging helps to explain the conventional process. The results of the simulation are to be useful for the next advanced process planning.
