A Novel CSMA MAC Protocol for TH UWB Ad-hoc Networks

Ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) is an emerging technology in the field of wireless applications. In this paper we propose and evaluate a novel busy medium detection method for TH UWB adhoc network. As UWB has power contraints regulated by FCC, the conventional carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) schemes used in carrier based wireless systems can not be used in UWB systems any more. We give out our scheme to detect the busy medium and try to reduce the probability of collisions in TH UWB ad-hoc network. The spreading codes of the transmission node are used in the TH modulation and additional PN sequence according to the destination node is also added to the modulation scheme to indicate the busy medium in transmission. Any nodes which want to send packets to target node will sense the PN sequence used in transmission and detect whether the target node can receive a packet or not, thus potential collisions are avoided.
