Moderate alcohol drinking and risk of type 2 diabets in asian men

초록

Objectives: The effect of alcohol consumption on risk of type 2 diabetes have been evaluated in many observational studies and a protective effect from moderate alcohol consumption has been suggested. Recent meta-analysis have shown conflicting results especially in men and Asians. In this study we aimed to evaluate the effect of moderate alcohol drinking on risk of type 2 diabetes in Asian men. Methods: A systematic search was conducted to identify relevant articles with a temporal association between alcohol consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes. The present analysis included studies which reported amount of alcohol intake in men conducted in Asian countries. Generic inverse variance method and a fixed model effect was used for the analysis. Results: A total of 4,451 references were screened and 43 studies were included. Among the 43 studies, 7 comparable Asian cohort studies were included in the meta-analysis. Compared to non-drinkers moderate alcohol consumption was associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes (RR=0.86 [95% CI 0.78-0.95)). Subgroup analysis showed that those with shorter duration of follow up (5 years or shorter) showed a significant beneficial effect of moderate alcohol consumption (RR=0.74 [0.62-0.89]) while those with longer follow up duration did not show a significant benefit (RR=0.92 [0.82-1.04]). Conclusions: The present study shows that moderate alcohol intake had a beneficial effect on type 2 diabetes risk in Asian men. However due to the small number of studies in this population, future well designed studies are needed to establish the effect and associated factors in the Asian population.
