Improvement of Bearing Capacity of Sands by Using Waste Tires

초록

The disposal of waste tires has become an environmental concern. It is estimated that 20 million waste tires in Korea annually of which only very few amounts are diverted into construction markets. In this research waste tires are used for soil improvement. The tires were seperated into sidewalls and treads to make a sort of tire-grids. The tire mats were tested in a large test chamber filled with sands. From the large model test it could be seen that the tire mats improved the bearing capacity of soils prominently.
