Effects of the Diabetes Camp on the Diabetes Management Behavior of Children and Adolescent with Type 1 Diabetes

Purpose Study purposes were to exam effects of the interdisciplinary diabetes camp on diabetes management behavior of children with type 1 diabetes and explore associations among their diabetes management behavior, self-efficacy, depression, knowledge and clinical variables. Methods: This study was a one group quasi-experimental study. The data were collected from January 2, 2013 to January 31, 2013. Study participants were children with type 1 diabetes and attended a four-day interdisciplinary diabetes camp. The researchers collected the data using structured questionnaires including Diabetes Management Behavior Scale, the Center for Epidemiological Studies- Depression Scale for Children, Self-Efficacy for Diabetes Self-Management, Michigan Diabetes Research and Training Center’s Brief Diabetes Knowledge Test and clinical variables. Results: The study participants were 15 children and adolescents with mean age of 12 (±2.9) years and slightly more than half of participants were girls (53.3%). At baseline, their diabetes management behavior, depression, self-efficacy and knowledge scores were .56 (±.13), 16.09 (±8.80), 61.80 (±20.74) and 70.16 (±15.67). Mean HbA1C was 8.8±2.0% and mean amount of injected insulin per day was 0.7(±0.3) units/kg/day. After the camp, their diabetes management score improved to .60 (±.17), but it was not statistically significant. However, two sub-domains of diabetes management behavior presented statistically significant improvement after the camp. The sub-domains were modifications of diabetes care plan (t=-2.548, p=.023) and intervention behaviors (t=-3.007, p=.009). The mean improvement of modifications diabetes of diabetes care plan after the camp was associated negatively with age at diagnosis (r=-.552, p=.033) and positively with self-efficacy (r=.561, p=.030).
