ultrasonographic finding of dermoid cyst in head and neck

- Purpose: to present various image findings of dermoid cyst in head and neck region - Material and methods: From January 2009 to August 2012, total 5 cases of dermoid cysts in head and neck region confirmed by excisional biopsy (n=4), and CT scan(n=1) were enrolled in this study. The location, echogenecity, encapsulation, and presence of echogenic foci representing calcification were analyzed - Results: the locations of dermoid cysts were periorbital region (n=2), retroauricular region (n=1), scalp(n=1), and sternal notch(n=1). Echogenecity was homogeneous hypo/anechoic (n=2), heterogeneous echogenecity (n=2) heterogeneous echogenecity with internal anechoic portion (n=1). All cases showed hyperechoic peripheral capsule. No definite calcification was seen in our study. - Conclusion: Dermoid cyst can be shown various image findings from completely anechoic cysts to solid echogenic mass. However, encapsulation is invariably seen.
