Analysis of the results of the distal phalanx fracture reduction by K-wire fixation

초록

Purpose: While most distal phalanx fractures are managed conservatively, percutaneous Kirschner wire (K-wire) fixation is frequently selected as a surgical option owing to its simplicity, low cost, and feasibility under local anesthesia. This study aimed to quantitatively assess the efficacy of K-wire fixation in promoting bone healing of distal phalanx fractures through radiographic evaluation. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients treated between January 2014 and November 2022, excluding cases with joint involvement. Collected data included patient demographics, fracture patterns, timing of K-wire removal, and radiographic measurements of fracture gap and angulation before and after fixation. Callus formation was examined using follow-up radiographs. Results: A total of 45 patients with 53 affected phalanges were reviewed, with transverse shaft fractures of the middle finger being the most frequent. The mean fracture gap was reduced from 2.15 mm preoperatively to 0.89 mm postoperatively. Angulation was also significantly corrected,
