Analysis of Airline Passengers’ Demand for Stopover Airport Choice - Focus on the Routes between East-Asia and Europe Era -

This study gives attention to the practical implications for the development of domestic airlines through the competitive strategies of Istanbul and Dubai International Airports emerging as powerful new ones in European hub ones and the finding influences on air passengers’ choice of stopovers for each transit route between East Asia and Europe. A significant difference was confirmed by setting the period before and after the global financial crisis through the chow test. The study results were summarized as follows: First, there was no high correlation between major variables like fares and total travel distance; second, there was a high correlation in the number of destinations with respect to all stopovers and period; third, there was the highest correlation in the block time for the competitiveness of small airports and large hub airports in stopovers; fourth, it was confirmed that the presence of codeshare among the characteristic variables of airlines was a key factor in the selection of airports via Istanbul and Dubai International Airports in terms of demand for transit routes between East Asia and Europe. Based on those results, it presented practical implications for each of Incheon International Airport’s hub and international strategies.
