The purpose of washing is to make the soiled clothes clean, and to maintain the whiteness of the white clothes. To increase the efficiency of household laundry detergents, most of them contain enzymes to improve the soil removal and bleaches to achieve the high levels of whitening, stain removal and antimicrobial properties. These days antimicrobial properties have received siginificant attention to prevent the odor of sweat. Proteases are the most common as the enzyme, and lipase and cellulases have also been incorporated in detergent formulas. Sodium percarbonates or sodium perborates are added to the heavy duty powder detergent for oxygen bleaches. Proteases and oxygen bleaches are activated at higher temperature and longer wash time. Bleach activators, such as tetraacetylethylenediamine(TAED), can be used to activate the oxygen bleach under milder conditions. TAED reacts with perhydroxy anion from oxygen bleach to form peracetic anion, that has higher oxidation potential and is activated at lower temperature. Koreans usually launder with cold water for 10 minutes in a pulsator type washer, so wash time and temperature is not sufficient to activate peroxide bleaches and enzymes. To protect environment, consumers have to use the recommend dose of detergents. The purpose of this study was to find out the most effective conditions, an wash temperature and an wash time, for the washing and the activities of the protease and the oxygen bleach under these conditions. EMPA soiled fabrics were used as specimens, commercial detergent(without enzyme and oxygen bleach), protease, sodium perborate and TAED were added separately to evaluate each of their washability. EMPA 111 was used to find the best conditions by protease , EMPA 115 by perborate and TAED, and EMPA 116 by both enzyme and bleach.
