Background: Change in taurine, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, was reported to play an important role in depression. The purpose of this study was to investigate correlation among dietary taurine intake, nutrients intake, dietary attitudes, dietary behaviors, and life stress by depression in Korean female college students. Methods: Subjects of this cross-sectional study, as measured by the CES-D (Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression) scale, were composed of 56 female college students with depression (depression group) and 122 female students without depression (control group). Intakes of dietary taurine and nutrients were assessed using 3-day food records (2 weekdays and 1 weekend day). Self-reported life stress score was determined using the revised life stress scale for college student. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 24.0 program. Results: Average height, body weight, and body mass index were 161.9cm, 55.0kg, and 21.0kg/m2 for depression group and those of control group were 161.9cm, 54.7kg, and 20.9kg/m2, respectively. There was no significant difference in average dietary taurine intake between depression group (87.6 mg/day) and control group (92.3 mg/day), but there was a tendency for lower average dietary taurine intake of depression group. Average dietary intakes of vitamin A and calcium of depression group were significantly lower compared to control group (p < 0.05). Average total scores of dietary attitudes (p < 0.01) and dietary behaviors (p < 0.05) were significantly lower in depression group compared to control group. Average scores of total life stress (p < 0.001) and all stress categories of depression group were significantly higher than those of control group. There was no significant correlation between score of the CES-D scale and dietary taurine intake. However, there was a significant negative correlation between score of the CES-D scale and vitamin A,
