Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of primary total hip arthroplasty using ceramic on ceramic bearing implant. Materials and Methods: Between April 2001 and January 2003, 86 cases(81 patients) of THA using ceramic on ceramic bearing cementless implant were performed. Among these cases, 84 hips of 79 patients who were followed up more than two years were investigated. The average age at index operation was 51 years old(19-83). The initial dianosis were osteonecrosis of femoral head in 44 cases, primary osteoarthritis in 8 cases, secondary osteoarthritis after fracture around hip joint in 7 cases, acetabular dysplasia in 7 cases, pyogenic arthritis sequelae in 7 cases, ankylosing hip in 4 cases, acute femoral neck fracture in 3 cases, and others in 4 cases. Results: Chip fracture of ceramic liner was occurred intraoperatively in 2 cases. Posterior dislocation was occurred at 3 weeks after surgery in one case and anterior dislocation with ceramic liner dissociation was occurred at 6 weeks after surgery in one case. On the last radiogram, there were no sign of loosening in acetabular cup, but one femoral stem was definitly loose and two femoral stems were possilbly loose. Other femoral stems were fixed well by bone ingrowth. There were no osteolysis at all. Conclusion: The short term results of primary total hip arthroplasty using ceramic on ceramic bearing implant was satisfactory.
