Enhanced Nitrification Employing Carriers of Zeolite and Activated Carbon in an Activated Sludge

This study was conducted to evaluate the role of two types of carrier in the continuous AS reactor-powdered activated carbon and powdered zeolite- for nitrification under high organic loading, zinc as well as phenol addition, respectively. Results indicated that adsorption capacity of zeolite and activated carbonwas an important characteristic to improve nitrification in both reactors. Especially, enhanced nitrification efficiency in AS+Z reactor was accomplished by the attached growth of nitrifier on the surface of carrier because zeolite has a superior ammonium adsorption capacity.
