Nitration of imidazole derivatives

Recently, high performance and low sensitive explosives have been developed to avoid unnecessary explosion by trivial impact. With mixed acids, nitration of 2-methylimidazole gave 2-(dinitromethylene)-4,5-imidazolidinedione at low temperature and 4-nitro-2-methylimidazole did 4,5-dinitro-2-methylimidazole at higher temperature. Imidazole-2-nitrolic acid was prepared from imidazole-2-carboxaldehyde via oxime with a mixture of anhydrous nitric acid and acetic acid.
