Biomimetic Oxidation Reaction of Sulfide Compounds

The oxidation reaction of alkyl aryl and heterocyclic sulfide compounds were studied using BAIB [Bis(acetoxy)iodo benzene] as oxidant. The selective newly developed Gif-Type System called GoAggInII (FeCl3 and BAIB as catalyst and oxidant in 1:25 ratio respectively in pyridine or methylene chloride solvent medium) oxidizes these sulfides to the corresponding sulfoxides and the product yields were analyzed by NMR. The system oxidizes smoothly to yield sulfoxide only. The resulting data are discussed in detail.
