THE EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF HEMOSTATIC POWDER UI-EWD IN PATIENTS WITH LOWER GASTROINTESTINAL BLEEDING

Introduction: Acute lower gastrointestinal bleeding (LGIB) is a common cause of hospitalization, and there are many cases of readmission for rebleeding after endoscopic hemostasis. Recently, endoscopic hemostatic powder (UI-EWD/Nexpowder Nextbiomedical, Incheon, South Korea) has been developed and used to manage LGIB. Aims & Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of UI-EWD in LGIB. We conducted this retrospective cohort study of LGIB at a tertiary center. A total number of consecutive patients with LGIB who were included in our researchwas 167. UI-EWD was applied as rescue therapy during endoscopic treatment in 55 patients. we evaluated the success rate of hemostasis, the adverse event related with UI-EWD and the rate of re-bleeding. Results: All hemostasis with UI-EWD was successful. The rebleeding rate within 28 days in the UI-EWD group was 5.5% (3/55), which was significantly lower than that in the conventional treatment group, 17.0% (19/112) (p-value:0.039). There were no adverse events associated with or without UI-EWD application. Conclusion: Apply of UI-EWD is considered as a very effective method for hemostasis, and prevention of rebleeding in LGIB patients who are difficult to control with conventional treatment. Based on this results, we suggest that considering the use of UI-EWD for hemostasis in LGIB is useful and safe.
