Satisfactomy exposure of the operative site in spinal surgery is critical to achieving a successfully outcome and minimizing surgical complication. Proper exposures does not necessarily mean a large incision and wide anatomic dissection. HISTORY Spinal surgery, which began in earnest at the end of the 19th century and blossomed in the early 20th century. CERVICAL SPINE AND CERVICOTHORACIC JUNCTION The choice of approach to the cervical spine depends on a number of factors. The fundamental principle guiding the surgeon’s primary strategy is the location of the pathology. Anterior pathology-anterior approach Posterior pathology-posterior approach The nature of any existing instability and the need to correct deformity are also critical factors to consider when choosing the appropriate surgical procedure.
