Effects of Coating Conditions on the Thickness and Morphology of Coated Layers on SiC Whiskers

Al2O3 coated layers on the surface of SiC whiskers were prepared by the homogeneous precipitation of Al2(SO4)3 and carbon coated layers by the pyrolysis of phenolic resin. The effects of coating conditions on the thickness and morphology of coated layers were examined by SEM and TEM. It is found that Al2O3 Coated layers becomes thinner and more uniform with decreasing Al2(SO4)3 concentration. Carbon coated layers were uniform, but very thin in thickness.
