The mechanical properties and low temperature degradation of ZTA and ATZ bioceramics

In this study, both the mechanical properties and the low temperature degradation of ATZ and ZTA composites were investigated. Al2O3 (TM-DAR, >99.99%, 0.1 μm, Taimei Chemical Co., Japan) and 3Y-TZP (Tosho, TZ-3SB-E, Tokyo, Japan) were used as the starting powders. Wide ranges of Al2O3/3Y-TZP composites were prepared varying the 3Y-TZP content from 20 vol% to 80 vol% and sintered at 1600˚C for 2h in air with the heating rate of 5˚C/min. Biaxial flexural strength of each composite was investigated applying the well-known Weibull statistics, fracture toughness were evaluated by SEVNB method. Furthermore, low temperature degradation has also been studied in the work, specimens of each composition were kept in water for 134˚C for 36h, and then the biaxial flexural strengths of specimens were investigated. The amounts of monoclinic phase in each composition after low temperature degradation were carried out by XRD, which is present by the integral intensity ratio of the diffraction intensity.
