초록
This study examines the broadcasting coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, analyzing disparities between the two. The findings reveal that the Olympic coverage was seven times greater in the number of broadcasts and eight times higher in airtime than the Paralympic coverage. This disparity stems from broadcasters' discretionary scheduling of the Paralympics due to lower public awareness and commercial viability. A key debate in expanding the Paralympic coverage is whether to include it in the ‘Nationally Significant Events’ list. Disability advocacy groups argue that increased coverage would boost public interest in para sports and improve perceptions of people with disabilities. However, major broadcasters oppose this, citing low viewership and concerns that mandatory coverage may hinder programming flexibility. Based on programming analysis and expert interviews, this study proposes a balanced approach: Instead of mandating full Paralympic coverage, only selected key events should be included in the ‘Nationally Significant Events’ list, requiring public service broadcasters to air them with government support. Additionally, alternative platforms such as online streaming should be leveraged to gradually increase media exposure.
