초록
This paper is a comparative study on the expression forms of Benefactive Constructions in both Korean and Japanese. Many studies so far have revealed similarities and differences between Korean and Japanese expressions. Based on the reviewed research, this paper presents the distinctive forms of expression in Japanese and Korean and describes the reasons why these phenomena appear. First of all, the unique forms found in the Japanese language are: “connection between benefactive verbs,” “expression representing negative instructions,” and “expression representing consideration.” Next, Korean-specific expressions include: “expression of possibility,” “expression of hope,” and “connection with the ‘-temiru’ verb.” While benefactive constructions in Korean and Japanese generally share many similarities, the phenomena presented in this paper are noteworthy. The reasons for these differences are as follows. One is the diversity of benefactive verbs in Japanese. In Japanese, seven benefactive verbs function organically, while in Korean, there are no benefactive verbs or at least not as many as in Japanese. Next, there is a difference in the degree of grammaticalization between the two languages. This paper argues that the above differences are caused by the degree of grammaticalization that occurs when abstracting from main verb usage to auxiliary verb usage. Finally, Japanese benefactive verbs are used as viewpoint verbs. In particular, it is argued that these phenomena may occur because the kureru verb has characteristics as a unique viewpoint verb that cannot be found in Korean or other languages.
