A Study for Improvements in Resistance Characteristics of a Semi-Planing Ship

In the present paper, flow fields around a semi-planing hull with a transom stern have been studied experimentally and numerically. Flow fields around the hull are measured at the towing tank of the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering(KRISO). And the flow field are simulated by an numerical method utilizing a MAC type Finite Difference Method and compared to the measurements at the design speed of 21 knots. The effect of the hull attitude is considered in the numerical computation to show good agreements with experimental ones. Based on the results so obtained, original hull form has been modified to have an improved resistance characteristics. Emphases are given to the reductions in wave and spray resistance of the ship. Through the model tests and numerical simulations, it will be shown that considerable improvement is achived in the present study.
