Rigorous Calculation of Pixel and Inter-electrode Capacitances of TFT-LCDs

A novel method to calculate a pixel and inter-eectrode capacitances of TFT-LCDs has been developed for the first time. It is based on the electrostatic energy obtained from 3-dimensional director and potential distribution profiles. The equation of motion of liquid crystals is expressed be tensorial formulation which includes an anisotropic elastic constants. As a result, we confirmed that pixel capacitance is more that 40% larger compared with the conventional one. It is also revealed that the gate-common and gate-data inter-electrode capacitances show not negligibly large values.
