Comparison of Health Status and Nutrient Intakes of the Elderly Women with Dementia

The prevalence of dementia is higher in women and it has a great burden of care by family, so the elderly with dementia often use the care facility. The purpose of this study was to compare health status and nutrient intakes of the elderly women with dementia in long-term care facility and day-time care facility. The subjects of this study were 47 elderly women with dementia using long-term care facility (long-term care facility group, LCFG) and 26 elderly women with dementia using day-time care facility (day-time care facility group, DCFG). Data were collected from July 2015 to November 2016. Health status was evaluated using anthropometric data, blood pressure, cognitive function, and dietary intake. Dietary intake was surveyed for 1 day with photographing and analyzed using CAN program 4.0 and evaluated with the Korean Dietary Reference Intakes (KDRI). Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 20.0. for Windows. The average age, height, weight, BMI, and duration of care facility of the subjects were 81.9 years, 150.7cm, 53.1kg, 23.4kg/m2, and 26 months, respectively and there were no significant difference between LCFG and DCFG. Average total score of MMSE-DS as cognitive function of the subjects was 15.6 points and it was significantly lower in LCFG compared to DCFG (p<0.01). Average intake of total calorie, carbohydrate, protein, lipid, vitamins, and minerals of LCFG were significantly lower compared to DCFG (p<0.05). More than 50% of the subjects had less intake of vitamin D, E, C, B6, riboflavin, calcium, sodium, potassium, and magnesium than KDRI and they were significantly lower in LCFG compared to DCFG (p<0.05). These results showed that nutrients intakes of the elderly women with dementia in care facility were very poor, especially in the case of LCFG. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate exactly health status of the elderly with dementia in care facility and to provide customized nutrition management for them.
