Experimental investigation on a static rollover angle model for commercial vehicle: new measurement method and theoretical model for double rear axle vehicle

An experimental validation of a theoretical model was performed to simulate the static rollover angle of a commercial vehicle. The theoretical model was derived based on the center of gravity model and the static rollover angle model. The experiments were carried out on different commercial vehicles and some special vehicles. The results were classified as single rear axle vehicles and double rear axle vehicles. The simulated data matched the measured data well for single rear axle vehicles, especially for symmetric vehicles. On the other hand, measurement issues were encountered on double rear axle vehicles during the center of gravity heigh test. The leading cause was the structural characteristics of a suspension module for double rear axle vehicles. Therefore, this study proposes the new measurement method and theoretical model for double rear axle vehicles. Experiments were performed on a double rear axle vehicle to validate the proposed method and model. The results showed that the measurement issue was eliminated, and good agreement was achieved between the simulated and measured static rollover angle.
