Formation of porous structure in TiAl based intermetallics by reaction synthesis

A series of porous structure was introduced in the TiAl based intermetallics by adopting a reaction synthesis method. The porous TiAl based intermetallics could be applied for light-weight high temperature materials owing to a low density and high mechanical stability up to elevated temperature. The porous structure was formed within the TiAl based matrix in the course of reaction synthesis stage based upon a diffusion process. In this study, pore shape was controlled to spherical or unidirectional type. Also, in this study, duplex structure (equiaxed γgrain + lamellar γ/α2 grain) or fully lamellar structure was developed as a matrix microstructure. The pore morphology including porosity and aspect ratio of the pore was characterized and used to verify the mechanical properties of porous TiAl based materials.
