A bioactive glass(Na2O-CaO-SiO2-P2O5) was reacted in a simulated body fluid(SBF), and the rate of hydroxyapatite formation on the glass was investigated under the various conditions of reaction. The hydroxyapatite deposit rate was faster under the dynamic condition than static one, and this is due to the faster forming rate of silica-rich layer under the dynamic condition. To investigate the effect of silica-rich layer on the hydroxyapatite formation, silica-rich layer was produced on the glasses by immersing the bioactive glass in an acid solution before reacting in SBF. The hydroxyapatite formation was easier in acid treated glasses.
