Characteristics of seizures associated with rickets in breastfed infants

초록

Purpose: While rickets in the past was due to lack of exposure to ultraviolet rays or insufficient intake of vitamin D, recently the occurrence is increasing in children with histories of breast milk feeding for long term periods. It is well known that vitamin D supply is short in children with absolute breast milk feeding. According to previous reports, it is also known that seizure may occur in patients with rickets. Results: Among the 17 subjects, 9 (53.0%) had seizure and 8 (47.0%) had no seizure. The median age for each group was 3.9±2.1 months (2-8 months) and 9.0±3.3 months (5-13 months), respectively. There were more male patients in the group with seizure and there were more female patients in the group without seizure. Laboratory results for each group showed serum Ca levels of 5.2±1.65 mg/dl and 9.3±1.34 mg/dl, serum P levels of 5.1±1.59 mg/dl and 3.8±1.2 mg/dl, serum ALP levels of 1848.6±1067.2 IU/L and 1462.1±708.4 IU/L, serum vitamin 25-OHD3 levels of 7.0±3.23 IU/L and 14.4±5.42 IU/L, serum PTH levels f 210.3±153.9 pg/ml and 158.5±133.2 pg/ml, respectively. Conclusion: Compared to the group without seizure in children with rickets, the median age
