Purpose: This study was to provide understanding about the meaning of the nasogastric tube insertion experiences by the cerebral stoke dysphagia patients. Methods: Data was collected through a face to face interview from 5 cerebral stroke patients who had dysphagia and experienced the nasogastric tube insertion. The contents of the interviews were analyzed using the hermeneutics phenomenological method developed by van Manen. Results: The results showed that the experience of the nasogastric tube insertion was not only limited to physical problems such as pain or discomfort, but also was linked to other psychological problems such as loss of pleasure in relation to eating food and feeling of social isolations. However, many patients revealed that they have withstood the nastogastric tube in order to overcome the stroke with desire that they will recover to have food eventually by mouth. Therefore, the essential themes that were associated with the experience of nasogatric tube insertion were as follows: "inevitable distressed treatment experience", "desire to pleasure from food intake", "disconnection with social interaction", and "intersection point between despair and hope". Conclusion: It contributes a deeper understanding of the essence of the experiences of nasogastric tube insertion in cerebral stroke dysphagia patients. On the basis of this understanding, this study would be likely to highlight the importance of not only physical focused care but also psychological and social aspects. Therefore, nurses should consider it when they provide nursing care to stroke patient with nasogastric insertion.
