The effects of sucrose and 2,4-D concentrations on cell growth and extracellular polysaccharide (ECP) production in suspension cultures of Angelica gigas Nakai were investigated. Final dry cell weight was increased from 14.1 to 23.2 g/L with an increase of initial sucrose concentration from 30 to 60 g/L. The ECP production was not apparently affected by initial sucrose levels. The maximum production of ECP (1.2 g/L) was achieved at an initial sucrose concentration of 50 g/L on day 8. High 2,4-D concentration was effective on ECP production but not on cell growth.
