Quantitative Measure of Dynamic False Contours on Plasma Display

Plasma displays represent the gray levels by the pulse width modulation technique that results in undesirable dynamic false contours. The degree or severity of the dynamic false contours appeared on the plasma displays have been measured by the simple MSE, SNR, or subjective human visual evaluation. However, the simple MSE or SNR are not exactly matched with the visual evaluation. Also, subjective visual evaluation is time consuming. This paper proposes a new quantitative measure for the dynamic false contours. The proposed method incorporates the characteristics of human visual system into the measure calculation. Experimental results indicate that the proposed measure closely matches with the subjective human visual evaluation.
