Application of a Taper Design Method for Spot-Size Converter Integrated Laser Diodes

Proceedings of the 7th Optoelectronics and Communications Conference, (Sydney, Australia, 1-5 July 2001) The design of a spot-size converter is important to improve the efficiency of optical coupling for a laser diode. Here, we propose a novel concept of optical confinement index for the design of a mode converting structure. The overlap integration of two nearby modes characterizes the modal confinement. Simple analysis provides the relation between the optical coupling loss and the modal profile in both of vertical and horizontal directions for a given LD structure using the effective index method. The generalization of a single step loss obtained from the overlap integration can be utilized for designing spot-size converter without being affected by the inconsistencies of other confinement indexes.
