The purpose of this study was to investigate anthropometric and blood biochemical characteristics, dietary behavior and health-related lifestyle of obese adolescents in Korea. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with anthropometric measurements, biochemical assessment and questionnaire analysis. The subjects were 9890 obese adolescents residing in Inchon area(106 elementary schools(n=7044), 42 middle schools(n=2697), and 6 high schools(n=149)). The statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 10.0 program. Most subjects belonged to medium degree of obesity. Blood cholesterol levels of the subjects were positively correlated with body fat, waist/hip ratio and BMI; HDL-cholesterol levels of the subjects were negatively correlated with anthropometric data and LDL-cholesterol levels of the subjects were positively correlated with body fat. Blood triglycerides levels of the subjects were positively correlated with body weight, body fat, waist/hip ratio and BMI. Most subjects had dietary problem such as overeating, unbalanced meal and skipping breakfast. Most commonly used foods at snack time were cookie, sweetened beverage and chocolates. The ratio of subjects eating green and yellow vegetables was lower compared to that of other foods, especially in elementary student subjects. Male subjects had exercise more frequently and longer compared to female subjects. Therefore, proper nutrition education is required for improvement of obese adolescents' dietary behavior and heath-related factor in Korea.
