Prevention and solving problem in H & N reconstruction

The head and neck are an important area of the body for sustaining multiple vital functions and for being a social work in exposed area. Reconstruction is essential if soft tissue defects occur either from trauma or tumor with the goal of preserving vital functions such as airway passage, food intake, and deglutition. The phases of head and neck reconstruction are preparation, execution, and finalization. Multiple flaps are known form previous studies for the use according to the size, thickness, and the composition of the defect. From this research we also know the different characteristics and the indication of diverse flaps. The treatment algorithms derived from this knowledge pool is a crucial tool for head and neck reconstruction. Despite the multitude of knowledge of the head and neck reconstruction sometimes does not unfold as planned. If in such a situation the unexpected problem is not managed appropriately, the surgeon can lose his balance and the flap become compromised. The author would like to discuss the management of unusual situations in head and neck reconstruction based on personal experience and literature review.
