Numerical study on the Performance of KVLCC2 Propeller Considering Periodic Motion of ship in Regular Head Waves

When a ship operates in waves, a propeller at the stern of the ship cannot avoid moving due to the ship motion. It is important to analyze the propulsion performance while considering the ship motion in waves for efficient ship operation. The pitch and heave motion of the ship has a dominant effect on the variation of the propeller performance and results in periodic motion of the propeller. In this study, a numerical analysis was done using a KP458 model propeller with a dimeter of 10 cm, which was designed for the KVLCC2 body plan. The propeller open water (POW) performance was calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) at a constant inflow velocity with two periodic motions. The ship motions used in these simulations were obtained from the simulation of KVLCC2 operating in a regular head wave, λ/L=1.6. The motion of the ship was then applied for numerical simulations to conduct periodical motion of propeller with consideration of the center of gravity. The variations of thrust and torque of the propeller which performs with the periodic heave and pitch motion were investigated, and then the effect of ship motion on the propulsion efficiency was analyzed.
