Study on the Gray-scale Representation of TFT-LCDs

In order to predict exactly the pixel voltage waveform and its effective voltage, we calculate 3-dimensionally the pixel capacitance considering the lateral field effects. Based on the results, the 1-dimensional calculation error of the effective pixel voltage is deduced and compared with the voltage margin allowable to 1 gray scale voltage according to the gray scale numbers. As a result, it is clarified that the conventional 1-dimensional method is not applicable to the gray scale numbers of more than 6 bits (262,114 colors).
