The paper presents a sound quality index which is used for evaluation of subjective perception of the sound emitted from bearings or motors of a motor driven power steering (MDPS) system in passenger car. The index is developed based on sound metrics psychoacoustic parameters such as loudness, sharpness, roughness, and tonality. A special tonality for evaluation of motor sound of MDPS system is also developed. The jury test is performed for the subjective evaluation of MDPS sounds. 10 MDSPS sounds are used for the subjective evaluation. Thirty persons were attended to the listening test of 10 MDPS. To select a subjective query for sound quality index development, various subjective expressions that can represent operating noise are investigated. Semantic different method is used for the query selection test. A query is selected through factor analysis of subjective results. As for the results of the subjective evaluation, the average value of results is calculated through statistical processing such as box whiskers. A sound quality index is developed by selecting sound quality parameter that are highly correlated with subjective evaluation values among Loudness, Roughness, Fluctuation Strength, Sharpness, and Tonality. © ICA 2022.All rights reserved
