Biomaterials used as an artificial bone require an appropriate bioactivity and a high mechanical strength. Even if the bioactivity of bioactive glasses is one of the highest among the implantable biomaterials, most of the bioactive glasses presently used have a poor mechanical strength, and several works have been carried out to improve their mechanical properties by coating the bioactive glasses on a strong substrate such as alumina or stainless steel. In this case, the matching of the glass to the substrate plays an important role for the development of the new biomaterial. The primary objective of the present study is to coat a bioactive glass to an alumina substrate without loosing a hydroxyapatite formation.
