Authentication to smart meter using biometric ECG in mobile devices

Smart meters deal with confidential data in the residential areas of smart grid systems. In such systems, smart meters must have ways to securely provide access of only authenticated users and to stored data collected from all smart appliances in home area network. To this end, we design and propose ECG-based secure authentication system (ESAS), an authentication system that comprises six components: (1) ECG trace acquisition, (2) preprocessing of collected ECT trace, (3) extracting features, (4) making templates, (5) authentication, (6) sending messages to smart meter for manipulating home appliances. Especially, to identify user, our proposed system exploits electrocardiogram (ECG) readings from wearable devices instead of typing passwords to improve security strength on site. Enhancement to collect stable data and matching them for authentication has been proposed.
