Two glasses were coated on a dense alumina disc in sequence, one for the ground coat to enhance the bonding between alumina and glass, and the other for the bioactivity. When heat-treated at 1200oC, the bioactive glass coat layer crystallized into a-wollastonite, and hydroxyapatite deposited on the coat layer in 12 hours in a simulated body fluid. The a-wollastonite can be easily dissolved in HCl. The HCl treated samples were soaked in a simulated body fluid, and found that the hydroxyapatite forming rate strongly depended on the amount of a-wollastonite remaining on the bioactive glass coat layer.
