Theoretical Calculation of the Packaging Diameter and Transient Region Length of a Deployable CFRP Boom

Nano satellites, such as a solar sail, can perform space missions at a lower cost than conventional satellites. Solar sails are packaged to minimize their volume before they are launched; then, they are separated from the aircraft in outer space and their sails are spread. Deployable masts are commonly used in practice. Numerous researches on CFRP-based boom are actively underway. In this study, we theoretically calculated the packaging diameter of a deployable boom and its transient region length. In addition, we manufactured and measured the deployable boom sample to verify its characteristics.
