초록

Porphyrins are commonly used in cancer treatment as photodynamic therapy, sonodynamic therapy, radiation therapy, diagnostic fluorescence imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, and photoacoustic imaging agents. Even though many porphyrins have been developed, only a handful have been used in clinical studies. Although the majority of porphyrin molecules are hydrophobic and aggregate in water, they are more suitable for administration when encapsulated or linked to nanoparticles (NPs). Combining materials with properties such as tissue longevity, targeting, safety tolerance, and hydrophilicity, among others, helps develop meaningful designs. Furthermore, multiple functional components are combined with targeting, screening, or therapeutic activities to create a single NP platform for cancer therapy, drug delivery, and organ healing and repair. In this chapter, we discuss the most recent breakthroughs in the manufacture and transport of porphyrin nanosystems, as well as their biological applications. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
