초록

As cultural diversity dominates the contemporary cities, urban landscape has become more and more multifarious. Itaewon, as a representatively hybrid town in Seoul, in particular, exhibits the state of chaos rather than that of order. Particularly, the less polished area such as back alleys behind the main streets, in which individuals' everyday lives supposed to be interconnected to each other, have been losing the indigenous sense of community due to a collision of different cultures. If such cultural collisions are deepened to continue diversified spatial partition, autonomous urban development is to be prevented. In order to solve such kinds of problems, the study attempts to examine how to assemble the neighborhood which is regarded as the sub-category of a city, to explore ways how to patch the fragments of urban fabrics, and to propose a new type of community space. The flow of urban space from the alleys links the polarized areas with the main streets to enable areas isolated to interact. The study also aims at incubating the alien residents with a special community area. Keyword: Itaewon, collision of culture, sense of community, incubating
