Micro/Nano-Scale Optical Printed Circuit Board and VLSI Photonic Integrated Circuits

We present an overview of our R&D activities at the OPERA National Research Center on Integrated Photonics, Korea, on the design, fabrication, and integration of micro/nano/quantum-scale optical wires and photonic devices for applications in a newly-conceived optical micro-system that we call “optical printed circuit board” (O-PCBs) and for “VLSI photonic integrated circuits” (VLSI-PIC). The objective of this study is to realize generic and application-specific O-PCBs and VLSI photonic circuits (ASPIC) that are compact, high-speed, intelligent, light-weight, low-energy and environmentally friendly for low-cost and high-volume universal applications.
