Effect of pH on radiation-induced apoptosis.

The effect of envirnmental pH on the radiation-induced apoptosis in tumor cells in vitro was investigated. An acidic environment markedly suppresses radiation-induced apoptosis probably by suppressing the expression of initial signals responsible for irradiation-induced apoptosis. Indications are that the signals persist in an acidic environment and trigger apoptosis when the environmental acidity is eased. Our results suggest that the acidic environment in human tumors may inhibit the apoptosis agter irradiation.
